RISPERSON: KEVIN DEVINE

Russian International School launches a new rubric - RISperson. Here we will talk about the people who make up RIS community.

We will tell you about our teachers, psychologists, logopaedists, tutors not only as professionals in their field, but also about interesting, active men of many talents. And sure we will also tell about pupils - who is the student of RIS, about his/her goals, tasks, everyday school routine.

We are pleased to present the first member of the RISperson heading - Kevin Devine, Headteacher Russian International School.

Kevin has worked at RIS since opening and made a significant contribution to the development of the school. Before joining RIS, Kevin lived and worked in 4 different countries and has good experience in building academic program in international educational institutions. Work and family take up most of his time (Kevin is married and has 3 children), he enjoys playing and watching sports  in his free time. And also he loves to travel and discover new places.

QUESTIONS:

  • Could you recommend a book that should read everyone?

It’s impossible to recommend just one book! The book I most enjoyed reading was ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ by Robert Louis Stevenson. It encompasses the classic battle between good and evil, exposes the strengths and weaknesses of the human character and stylistically, in my opinion, is one of the best books ever written! The books I’d recommend to pupils are: Of Mice and Men, The Crucible, 1984, An Inspector Calls, Lord of the Flies, Animal Farm, Die Verwandlung and Biedermann und die Brandstifter. From these books, I feel that we can learn a great deal about and how we interpret the world around us.

  • Describe event that changed your life?

It’s a cliché but the event that changed my life was the birth of my first child. In an instant, I grew up. My outlook on life completely altered because I understood that I was now responsible for someone else.

  • What else can you teach pupils in addition to the school program?

The most important thing I can teach pupils is how to communicate effectively with different people and how the appropriate use of humour can help in doing this.
