BILINGUAL EDUCATION

BILINGUAL EDUCATION FROM CHILDHOOD

At Russian International School we rely on the most modern and effective teaching methods so that our students achieve the best results throughout their education. Effective learning of two or more foreign languages depends primarily on a properly chosen methodological base that takes into account the age of the child and his or her individual characteristics. Of course, there have always been linguistically gifted children, but in general, almost any healthy child is able to simultaneously learn two or three languages with a well-designed program. As elsewhere, the main result is achieved through  systematic study and maximum immersion into the subject. In our school, we have brought out another approach: the influence of the teacher’s personality. This is also a very serious prerequisite for successful language learning. Therefore, in our bilingual school, most teachers are not only native speakers, but also outstanding, motivating and very interesting people.

Recent research into bilingualism has provided scientific proof that children learning two or more languages have a number of positive characteristics as they are able to:

- Easily learn other foreign languages with a minimum of effort.
- Possess high levels of attentional shift.
- Have a high level of development of auditory and visual memory
- Know how to better formulate their thoughts out loud.
- Have a wider outlook and adaptability, thanks to the assimilation of culture and perspective of the world of the studied languages.

The pedagogical approach in our bilingual school in Moscow is based on the development of communication skills, which we believe are of fundamental importance. A child who learns a language, but who does not know how or does not want to communicate in it, very quickly loses interest and willingness to continue learning. Therefore, despite the serious methodological base of Russian International School, we are very careful to ensure that the child does not lose the desire for communication. The more “drivers” he has for learning a language, the more actively and successfully this process will go. Teachers and educators at RIS, as much as possible, encourage communication amongst children in a foreign language outside the classroom.
