INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMME

LOWER SECONDARY SCHOOL

The Key Stage 3 curriculum builds upon the skills and knowledge established in Key Stage 2. Study of the Key Stage 3 programme furnishes pupils with the necessary skills and understanding to tackle the increased academic challenges of Key Stage 4, where they sit the IGCSE examinations. From September 2018, RIS will offer pupils the opportunity to study English, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography, business studies and either French or German.

English is both a subject in its own right and the medium for teaching; for pupils, understanding the language provides access to the whole curriculum. Fluency in the English language is an essential foundation for success in all subjects. Pupils will be taught to speak clearly and convey ideas confidently using Standard English. They will learn how to justify their ideas with reasons; ask questions to check understanding; develop vocabulary and build knowledge; negotiate; evaluate and build on the ideas of others; and select the appropriate register for effective communication. They will also be taught to give well-structured descriptions and explanations and develop their understanding through, hypothesising and exploring ideas. This will enable them to clarify their thinking as well as organise their ideas for writing.
